STAGE 2: LEARN TO TRAIN
The Learn to Train stage of the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model typically includes ages 9–12, and is considered the most critical stage for developing sport-specific skills.
Building on the foundation established in the Fundamentals stage, this phase focuses on refining fundamental movement skills and introducing more structured skill development related to specific sports.
Athletes begin to learn proper techniques, tactical awareness, and decision-making abilities in a variety of competitive and non-competitive environments.
While training becomes more organized, the emphasis remains on fun, variety, and continued participation in multiple sports to avoid early specialization.
This stage sets the groundwork for future athletic performance by developing strong motor patterns, sport intelligence, and a positive attitude toward training and competition.
